1st December

It is December now - how the time passes, hm?

The red ribbon shall remind us that today is World Aids Day. According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 39.5 million people living with HIV, including 2.3 million children, and during 2006 some 4.3 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.

This years theme is Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise - Accountability

What else happened on the 1st of December? Let me show you some facts:

1835 - Hans Christian Andersen publishes first book of fairy tales

1919 - Lady Astor becomes first female member of the British Parliament to take her seat (she had been elected to that position on November 28).

1955 - American Civil Rights Movement: In Montgomery, Alabama, seamstress Rosa Parks refuses to give her bus seat to a white man and is arrested for violating the city's racial segregation laws, an incident which leads to the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

1964 - Vietnam War: US President Lyndon B. Johnson and his top-ranking advisers meet to discuss plans to bomb North Vietnam.

1975 - The long-running soap opera The Edge of Night switches networks to ABC after 19 years on CBS.

1982 - At the University of Utah, Barney Clark becomes the first person to receive a permanent artificial heart.

1990 - Channel Tunnel sections started from the United Kingdom and France meet 40 meters beneath the seabed.

2005 - South Africa's Constitutional Court extends marriage equality to homosexual couples.

Only some facts about this day - here is my fact about this day. It is cold, it is cosy and we already had a visitor.

More later - need a shower now.
